Tornadoes, Flooding and Record Heat Ahead of July 4th Holiday Video

Transcript for Tornadoes, Flooding and Record Heat Ahead of July 4th Holiday

We'll turn to that extreme weather across the country, tornadoes, flooding, record heat ahead of the holiday. Ginger watching it all. No injuries or deaths reported overnight but look at this stunning video. Plenty of up close video from this tornado in lee's summit, Missouri. South and east of Kansas City, one of the spots from coast to coast, California to Montana to Florida with more than 100 severe storm reports. We have to start in Missouri. Check this out. It took the whole building. Reporter: Ripping through a Kansas City suburb, sirens blaring. A tornado passing right over busy highways. Look at the vortices. Reporter: Spitting out debris. Exploding transformers sending sparks flying. As soon as we saw the rotation we knew it was time to leave. Reporter: And for good reason threatening storms looming over busy neighborhoods. Floodwater wiping out parked cars. One now parked on top of a tree. Ferocious storms whipping through Maryland Tuesday. Look at the boats on this dock. Trees yanked from the ground landing on houses and decks. The roof on this gas station collapsing. Farther west, the sky filled with lightning. No mercy from mother nature ahead of this holiday weekend. The culprit from those storms and now this afternoon and evening will be this stationary front and low pressure system sliding right across it so we have to include Amarillo, Oklahoma City all the way through northern Arkansas and up to Louisville and Nashville all included with the damaging wind, of course, we know it can do -- make tornadoes. We just saw that and you could see large hail. So this going into your afternoon and evening tonight when everyone is traveling. Yes, and the weather won't slow people down a bit, ginger. Busy holiday travel weekend.

Congress members Gardner, Coffman introduce VA spending bills

Mark Harden | Denver Business Journal

The U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner and U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado have introduced bills in Congress that would raise the spending cap on the Denver VA Medical Center project while also freezing bonuses for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officials.

The bills from the two Republicans would keep officials from getting bonuses until the facility in Aurora is fully operational, in addition to requiring an investigation into cost overruns at the hospital and transferring all future construction authority for VA hospitals to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Earlier this month, a new cost estimate for the hospital was announced, totaling $1.73 billion, $1.1 billion more than the cost estimate given when the project broke ground in 2010.

An $800 million spending cap was placed on the project by Congress that now must be raised in order to make available the money needed to finish building the hospital.

"The VA paying out bonuses while veterans go without the care they need is completely unacceptable," Gardner said. "This legislation would start to hold the VA accountable for their failures while also making sure that this critical facility is, at long last, completed."

"The massive VA mismanagement of this hospital is offensive to the veterans it is supposed to serve and offensive to taxpayers funding the project," said Coffman, D-Aurora. "My bill would help get the hospital built for the veterans who deserve the care it will provide, while holding the VA accountable for its failures and ensure this never happens again."

The VA pays out hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses every year, Coffman's office said, including $360 million authorized for bonuses in fiscal 2015.

ObamaCare Website Opens Portal to FREAK Hackers

$ 1Aaabapajama.jpgPresident Obama signed regulations approved by the Republican Party-controlled Congress that weakened tech security for iPhones and Android-based smartphones. Accordingly, those who signed up for health insurance on the ObamaCare website are now more vulnerable to hacking.

http://nubodyofdallas.com

Russia Today reports that, "Tech firms are rushing to fix a disastrous security flaw dubbed 'FREAK', stemming from the US government's https://twitter.com/DallasNews requirement of lower encryption standards, that for over a decade left millions of users visiting 'secured' websites exposed to potential attacks."

Apple must compy with the National Security Administration (NSA) to permit the U.S. government to spy on iPhone users.

According to Russia Today, "The entire weakness of the encryption design stems from Washington's effort to regulate the export of products utilizing "strong" encryption. Now three decades later, as the export-grade encryption standard was never removed, such weak encryption could be pretty easily cracked, leaving clients' devices potentially exposed."

Those using the Google search engine are at high risk of hacking too.

Common misconceptions with autism in the workplace

Dr. Katherine Loveland, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at UT Health

For those on the autism spectrum, being lumped into a stereotype happens all too often. When it comes to a work environment, those stereotypes can be exacerbated.

Popular culture tends to present someone with autism as being a highly intelligent introvert with little communication skills, but that's not always the case, says Dr. Katherine Loveland, a psychiatric and behavioral science professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School.

"Everything you know about autism may be true in some sense, but everyone also has their own personality, family history and medical history," Loveland said.

Start your day with Houston Business Journal news in your inbox. Sign up for Morning Edition here.

It's important to remove stereotypes from the equation when dealing with someone on the autism spectrum in the workplace, she said. However, there are still some factors that need to considered.

People with autism tend to suffer from higher levels of anxiety, especially with social interaction. It can be hard for those with autism to relate to colleagues or communicate in a group setting, Loveland said. To help someone handle his or her anxiety, work with them to find an accommodation to make the situation easier.

"If you have social anxiety, it can be hard to do anything," Loveland said. "Imagine being socially anxious and going to a job interview. Imagine how difficult that is."

Some day-to-day tasks may be challenging, such as multitasking and time management. One client Loveland has worked with described it to her as not having enough bandwidth to process all the information at once. Another client would pick the most socially accepted person in the room and copy their actions to try and fit in.

Boston Heart Diagnostics expands with new Framingham site

Boston Heart Diagnostics - 175 Crossing

Boston Heart Diagnostics has added space across the street from its location at 175 Crossing, pictured.

Boston Heart Diagnostics is expanding with the lease of another building in Framingham, a move necessary for the company to add an estimated 80 more employees to its ranks in 2015.

The company will lease 35,000 square feet of space from National Development at 200 Crossing Boulevard in Framingham. The space is in addition to the 71,000 square feet the company occupies at two other locations in Framingham.

"We've been really happy in Framingham, and glad to be part of the tradition of (cardiovascular disease) prevention," said Boston Heart CEO Susan Hertzberg. "It started with the Framingham heart study, and I'm looking forward to continued growth and not just working in the community but being part of the community."

Boston Heart's growth is not unexpected. The organization, which is known for its advanced diagnostics that can test and track patients' cardiovascular disease, has grown from just three employees when it was founded in 2007 to more than 350 today.

Majority of that growth has occurred since Hertzberg came on board in 2010 as the company's 38th employee. Hertzberg expects the growth to continue in the years ahead.

"We've build a better mouse trap for managing high risk and secondary patients for heart disease," Hertzberg said.

Such organic growth has meant that the company will add employees in every sector of the business as it broadens its services to other parts of the country.

Though Boston Heart was acquired by Eurofins Scientific in December, Hertzberg said the expansion was in the works prior to the acquisition by Luxembourg firm.

Tips For Using Leftover Rocks

From Networx's Seyward Rebhal:

Pea gravel, landscaping pebbles, decorative rock, and shell gravel - these all refer to various forms of very small stones used to spruce up outdoor spaces. You'll find them in public parks and around commercial structures, and most commonly of all, in your residential yard or garden.

So that's not what this article is about. I won't be suggesting that you use them in your driveway or that you set up a winding path across your lawn. Because, you now, obviously you can do that!

No, these are the alterative applications for those pretty little pebbles. These are ideas for what to do with the leftovers, once the driveway has been dealt with and the lawn is fully landscaped. And you're staring at a little stack of stones with nowhere to call home . . .

List and captions courtesy of Networx

Homemade Home ImprovementPretty pebbles in a variety of earth tones can create a lovely backsplash in a kitchen, bathroom or mud room. Depending on how many you have, you can do an entire area or just an accent.

Make MosaicMosaic is as easy as tiling a backsplash, and even a novice can produce something beautiful. Try covering a ceramic square to create a coaster for your tea kettle (or hot pots and pans). Or, mosaic a small picture frame, large mirror frame, lamp, etc. Stone mosaic is a lovely way to bring some natural texture into a room.

Zen GardenMost miniature Zen gardens - also called Japanese rock gardens - are made on a bed of sand, but you can just as easily use pebbles instead. Fill a small tray with a layer of fine pebbles, and then add a few objects like larger rocks, small statues, or glass orbs. Make sure to include a mini rake (a fork will work if you're really desperate). Zen gardens make a great desktop or coffee table topper. Rake, arrange, and relax.

Potted PlantsUse pea gravel to top off your potted indoor plants. Instead of seeing the dirt, you'll see a nice light stone - a much cleaner look.

Displayed As A CollectionSort the stones by color and shade, and then stack them in a glass vase. You can create a pretty pattern of contrasting colors, or a simple elegant ombre gradient.

Heating PadOne of the oldest DIY projects is to fill a sock with rice, which you can then microwave to create an easy heating pad. It works with pebbles, too.

Toothbrush HolderIf you have something really pretty like river rock, you can use it to fill a wide mouth, small glass vase (or mason jar) about half way up. Now, just plunge your toothbrush into the pebbles and it will stand upright - a no-fuss, nature-inspired toothbrush holder! This would also work well for makeup brushes.

DIY Stone Hot PadHometalk member and DIY blogger Cheri from It's So Very Cheri made a gorgeous stone hot pad/floor mat for a whopping $3. Learn how to make your own DIY stone hot pad on It's So Very Cheri.

Sensory TableA sensory table is a great tool for children to explore their world. Fill the bottom of a large bin with a layer of gravel, and then add some small toys. They can dig with their hands, bury and find the toys, make hills and valleys, etc. My son would just love it if I set up a mock construction site with his little diggers and dozers!

Make A Mancala SetMancala is an African game that's easy to set up and so fun to play. I grew up on this game, and it's great for children and grown-ups alike. You can fashion your own board out of wood (you'll need some special tools to create the troughs), or simulate the structure using a series of small bowls.

Also On The Huffington Post...in this short video therapist Andy Aragon describes the origins and benefits of hot stone therapy using basalt stones.

From drywall to tile, there are many options for internal wall finish

The "Ask a Builder" series is dedicated to answering some of the many questions Fairbanks residents have about building, energy and the many other parts of home life.

FAIRBANKS -- We talk a lot about insulation, R-values and heat loss through your walls. But rarely do we discuss the purpose of the layer closest to you -- the interior finish. As a quick review of interior finishes -- first, finish materials are generally non-combustible, which provides some protection from the spread of a house fire. They also cover up the insulation and electrical and plumbing systems, which, while necessary, aren't always attractive. Finally, an interior finish gives you something to paint or hang pictures on.

Marble Tiles: Classic Style, Great Investment

At Floor and Decor Outlets, you can find a great selection of marble tiles for your floor at factory direct prices. Marble tiles can be used for flooring, countertops, backsplashes, on walls, fireplaces, and even on your home's exterior.

Marble tile comes in a variety of sizes from 2" x 2" up to 24" x 24". It also comes in a wide selection of colors and shapes to fit your unique needs. There are coordinating mosaic patterns to add interest to the area. Create a design on your floor or wall by mixing solid color marble tile and mosaic tile. You can also mix marble tiles with other materials for a more interesting design.

Marble tile does take more maintenance and care to keep it looking great. Dirt tracked in from outdoors can act like sandpaper scratching marble tile. Sliding furniture across the floor can also scratch the tiles and cause damage. Certain foods, when spilled, can etch or discolor marble tile as well.

To keep your marble tile looking great, it's important to use a sealer. Wipe any spills as soon as they happen. Protect furniture legs to prevent scratching from moving them around. Mop the floor twice a week to wipe away any dirt or dust that can cause scratches.

Though marble tile is harder to take care of, it is beautiful and adds value to your home. Resale value can be higher especially if the marble tile is in the kitchen or bath. It is classic and will be in style for many, many years. Marble tile is very hard and, with proper care, will hold up for a long time.

Floor and Decor Outlets offers a great selection of marble tiles at great prices. They eliminate the middle man to offer you factory direct pricing on marble tiles and more. Live help and DIY guides are available to help you with your home improvement projects. Their site is easy to navigate and the product pictures are bright and vivid. Magnificent mosaics! - Free Online Library

ITALIAN mosaic tile-maker Trend has enriched its top-line Liberty collection for 2011 with sumptuous new colours, all handcrafted from stained glass and featuring the signature chromatic and iridescent textures of this exclusive design.

Composed of hand-cut tesserae in a variety of compatible shapes, Liberty re-interprets glass mosaic design by presenting a selection of different tile shades and sizes, with both straight and sinuous lines, so that the reflective light of the material is the predominant decorative element.

The new Liberty creations extend from the shimmering brilliance of Diamond and Pearl, through the contemporary look of Denim and Dove, to the dramatic, deep tones of Bronzite, Onyx and Tobacco. Ideal for accent mosaic panels or flamboyant showcase walls and ceilings, Liberty is offered in film-faced modules measuring approximately 26cm x 31cm.

In line with Trend's 'green' ethos of using ecosustainable materials, Liberty mosaics are made from up to 75 per cent recycled glass.

The Liberty collection results from a design collaboration with celebrated Italian artist Giulio Candussio, creator of the dramatic mosaic mural at New York's World Trade Centre.

To enable the distinctive mosaic designs to be installed with ease, each irregularly-shaped module is faced with clear film, so that it can be positioned, cut and adjusted without disrupting the essential pattern. A complete range of grout colours is available in complementary and contrasting shades. Fully frost and water resistant, Liberty tiles are 4mm thick with 1mm joints and are perfect for many interior and exterior settings, including bathrooms, wetrooms and outside living areas.

Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: March 23

From left: The Bard, The Booze. From left: The Bard, The Booze.

If my high school English class had been held at a bar, I would have paid way more attention to the works of William Shakespeare, and maybe I would be able to write more good than I do now. So a pairing of theater and alcohol at The Wild Detectives tonight has me particularly intrigued. Much Ado About Nothing is one we skipped (I skipped, at least) in class, but I gather it's a comedic play with a significantly lower body count than some of The Bard's other famous works.

We're also enjoying the last bit of fallout from the musical atom bomb that was SXSW in Austin last week, so there are some bands to catch before they hit that dusty trail out of Texas once and for all. Here are our picks for things to do tonight.

1. Shakespeare at the Bar is back, and The Wild Detectives did a pretty interesting interview with the tipsy troupe ahead of tonight's performance. Among other tidbits, they do very few rehearsals beforehand and may kick back a beer or two to "stave off the nerves." I can barely spit out a stone-cold sober "hello" without tripping over my words, so being able to get through a line like "In time the savage bull doth bear the yoke..." a couple drinks in strikes me as a downright Herculean feat. Doors are at 8 pm, and the show starts an hour later.

If you prefer your Shakespeare a bit dryer, as it were, part three of an unabridged stage reading of Henry V is at the Wyly Theatre at 7 pm.

2. Sylvan Esso's show at the Granada tomorrow night is sold out, but if you squeeze into what's sure to be a packed room at Good Records by 6 pm, you can catch the electropop duo for an in-store performance.

3. The roving Vice Palace venue (today's show is at Aqua Lab Sound Recordings in Deep Ellum) is teaming up with Burger Records and the Lolipop Records SXSW Caravan Tour for "Spring Fling No. 2," a music mini-festival in its own right. The first show is at 4 pm, and it runs through the night. I'm still kicking myself for missing Kim The Created, a great little garage rock act, at 35 Denton a couple weeks ago, so this may be a chance to rectify that mistake.

This also seems like further proof that all the best parts of South By Southwest, namely, the bands, will make their way to Dallas without us good North Texas folks having to wade into the chaos that is Austin every spring. Case in point: Yesterday's Spillover Music Fest, which featured some of the best bands that performed at SXSW and gave us the chance to put together this great photo gallery.

For more to do tonight, go here.

NTT Communications to Test Service for Information Sharing between Smartphones and Digital Signage

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within the NTT Group (NYSE:NTT), announced today that it will test information sharing between smartphones and digital signage using communication technology based on the WebSocket and WebRTC protocols. The test will be conducted at Mihama Town Resort American Village (American Village) in Chatancho, Okinawa Prefecture from January 31 to the end of February.

Service acceptability, availability and technical validity will be tested by having users download sightseeing- and disaster-related information from digital signage installed in FASHION PLAZA (1st floor). Users will also share their photos by using smartphones to read a QR code on a digital sign to access the service website. Photos uploaded to the website will be used for the creation of mosaic art, which will turn the photos into small pieces of large mosaics that will be displayed on the digital signage. The mosaics will also be available for downloading to users' smartphones.

Diagram 1: Mosaic Art (sample)

http://www.ntt.com/aboutus_e/news/data/images/20150130a.jpg

During the test, monitors will be asked to evaluate information sharing via digital signage under various scenarios, including normal conditions for sightseeing information and simulated emergency conditions for sharing information between disaster victims.

The test also will evaluate how traffic conditions affect real-time information uploading and downloading of photos using digital signage, specifically in terms of effectiveness, potential technological problems and system load characteristics.

Diagram 2: Framework of Test Service using WebSocket and WebRTC

http://www.ntt.com/aboutus_e/news/data/images/20150130b.jpg

Digital signage is useful for disseminating information in fixed locations for purposes such as sightseeing or disaster-relief operations. Another practical use is displaying up-to-date images gathered from smartphones and network cameras. In some instances, however, connection between devices and signage or network cameras is prevented by the existence of a privacy separator function, which blocks connection and communication between devices using the same network access point. Connection also can be inhibited if two devices are using different wireless LANs. In the test, WebSocket and WebRTC are expected to enable user devices to easily locate and connect to digital signage.

Please see the attachment to learn about scenarios to be evaluated in test. [Attachment]

http://www.ntt.com/aboutus_e/news/data/pdf/20150130.pdf

WebSocket and WebRTC, new protocols for communication between Web browsers, do not rely on operating systems or the display formats of user devices, nor do they require specific applications. Communication between devices is enabled simply by using a Web browser, allowing a wide variety of devices to connect on the same network. The other advantage of these protocols is that their data packet sizes are small compared to the HTTP communication protocol. Also, WebRTC does not require a server for communication after devices are connected. Such advantages are especially useful in places where there is high-volume traffic, such as tourist sites or during disasters.

If the test is successful, it is expected to contribute to the ongoing standardization of the Web of Things (WoT), an advanced concept of the Internet of Things (IoT). WoT leverages Web technologies, such as WebSocket or WebRTC, for IoT services and applications that connect large numbers of devices via a network. Going forward, NTT Com also intends to introduce related services for sharing sightseeing or disaster information via Wi-Fi hotspots and digital signage.

The test, which has been designated as an advanced ITC international standardization project for evaluating communication environment transmittance technologies in next-generation browsers, was entrusted to NTT Communications by the Ministry of Interior Affairs and Communications in July 2014.

Landscaping :: Driveway Cleaning - Tips for Cleaning Anti Freeze

Maintaining your driveway in a good condition and keeping it stain free may look very difficult. Oil spills, antifreeze, weeds, rust stains are just a few examples of stains that can damage your driveway. Driveway cleaning on a periodic basis therefore becomes very crucial and important.

You might have had to deal with antifreeze spills from your car. The best way to remove antifreeze and clear up the stains that are left behind is by cleaning the driveway the minute you spot an antifreeze spill. There are various household cleaners that can be used for driveway cleaning.

If your driveway is made up of asphalt, then cleaning any type of stain can be a little tricky. Asphalt gets damaged very easily and requires extreme precaution and care. Using strong chemicals or even household detergents for driveway cleaning can easily weaken asphalt. It is therefore advisable for you to use mild household detergent to clean the surface.

Firstly, mix half a cup of mild detergent in a bucket of hot water. Two-thirds of water would be sufficient. To this mixture, add at least two cups of white vinegar. Remember to wear gloves to protect your hand from antifreeze.

Apply a thick coating of the above mixture on the affected area. Allow the mixture to stay on for 10 minutes. The vinegar acts like a bleaching agent and removes away the stains while the detergent will help to loosen out the antifreeze from the surface making it easier for you to remove. Now scrub the stain with a hard brush and rinse it off with sufficient amounts of water. Failing to wash the vinegar off completely might make the area lighter in color when compared to the rest of the driveway.

It is advisable to use cat litter when pressure cleaning your driveway as it is made up of other materials like concrete, gravel, etc. Sprinkle liberal amounts of litter on the area where antifreeze spill has occurred. Allow it to soak up the antifreeze thoroughly. For small quantities it may hardly take 30 minutes but if the area that has to be covered is large, it is better to leave cat litter overnight. The following morning, sweep it off with a broom or hard brush and dispose off the litter in plastic bags. Then sprinkle detergent on the surface and scrub it off with a hard brush. Rinse the entire driveway with sufficient amounts of water. Repeat the process if you still find antifreeze stains.

If the stains prove very tough to remove, then your last resort should be muriatic acid which is known to remove just about any type of stain off the driveway. Pressure cleaning your driveway will yield better results when compared to cleaning with a garden hose. The efficiency of removing any type of stain; the minimum amount of time that is required when compared to other types of cleaning methods and the minimum amount of chemicals required make pressure washing a superior type of cleaning technique when compared to other cleaning methods

Driveway pressure cleaning has to be done as soon as you see the stains on your driveway. This will make your cleaning job a lot easier.

Mosaic Designs and Patterns

Mosaic art is very much in demand particularly for interior design. The beauty of mosaic art lies in the creativity of the artist wherein the artist has to decide placement of the shapes (small pieces of materials such as glass or stone) to create beautiful and intricate mosaic designs and patterns. Mosaic forms and designs have been in use for a great number of years. The term, mosaic, is derived from a Greek word. The Greek meaning is 'patient work.' Truly, mosaic art is like a tradition that is passed down from generations wherein the artist requires ample patience to create such a work of art.

The most famous mosaic designs and patterns from the olden days date back to the 6th century. The mosaics of Ravenna in Italy, created by little pieces of glass continue to mesmerize people. Since then, mosaic art has been considered to be the most versatile kind of art form. Whether they are used on walls, ceilings, and floor panels or even on furniture, mosaic art has uniqueness in its entire layout and design.

Various Designs and Patterns in Mosaic Art

Mosaic designs can range from the simple to the complex kinds. In the olden days, mosaic designs and patterns were used to depict stories from the Bible. Thus, many mosaic patterns were based on religious themes. The creativity of this art form is visible throughout history. The beautiful mosaic patterns can be seen on the walls and floors of spectacular cathedrals and public buildings from the olden era. These religious designs were done on various surfaces and mosaics soon became a part of Christian art. From marble to glass, the artists worked endlessly to perfect such paintings.

Today, mosaic designs are used to accentuate interiors. This can be in the form of a painting or even as a design upon tabletop. There are many modern techniques that are used to make the creation of mosaic design an easy process. These modern methods of production make it possible to achieve effects such as gradation within a particular tile. (This was a tedious process in the ancient days when glass was used although it is considered to be very durable.)

An artist can create numerous designs and patterns in mosaic art. From various colors and shapes, an artist can work using ceramic tiles, pieces of glass, natural clay or even colored glaze. An artist can create geometrical patterns or even depict humans through mosaic art. It all depends upon the mood an artist wants to create or the kind of theme he/she is working upon.

There are two basic steps in the application of mosaic designs and patterns:

Indirect method: The indirect method is used to cover larger areas wherein the artist cannot physically stand and create the pattern. The mosaic design is created and placed on a sheet of paper that has adhesive on one side. This is then flipped and glued over the required surface.

Direct Method: With this technique, the mosaic patterns are created directly onto the required surface. This is useful to create smaller designs.

In the recent times, many more techniques are being developed which incorporate these basic methods. The patterns and designs that can be created are limitless. The beauty and intricacy of mosaic art is what makes it one of the most favorite decorative styles today.

The perfect master bath: tips from designer brigid saah of tile market.

"EVEN [AS MANY HOMES GET] SMALLER, THE MASTER BATH CONTINUES TO GROW. Homeowners are willing to invest considerable time and budget to get their ideal room just right.

"THE ESSENTIALS ARE A HUGE WALK-IN SHOWER WITH JETS in the shower walls, and multiple shower heads, including a rain shower head. The trend is the curbless shower entry, meaning the shower and the bathroom floor are on the same level. Then there's a freestanding soaking tub--the egg shape is the most popular. There should be a chandelier as well as recessed ceiling lighting, sconces and make-up lighting, with everything on dimmers. A separate toilet room for sure. Separate vanities or a long vanity with separate basins. Many homeowners want a television built into the vanity mirror and surround-sound music, too.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

"WHITE MARBLE REIGNS SUPREME. Homeowners are asking for white Calacotta marble because it is very white and can look warm or cool, depending on whether the veining is gold or gray. Own ers want marble on the walls going from the countertops to the ceiling. Then we hang a beautiful framed mirror on the marble. In high-end installations, my clients are trending away from granite. If not marble, they choose quartz.

"FOR THE FLOOR TILES I'M SEEING LARGE FORMAT, 36 by 36 inches. Rectangular tiles on the floor and shower walls are becoming more common. These big tiles are inset with design accents made up of smaller and different-shaped tiles, some of them glass. But even the glass mosaic tiles are going larger. Custom tile murals that look like wallpaper or fabric are popular and pricey; the finished product is unique to each bathroom.

"WHITE IS THE COLOR OF CHOICE. Generally, we bring accent colors in from the bedroom to create continuity. But sometimes clients want a little touch of watery blue or green accents, especially if their property is on water. And gray has been a huge accent lately."--MARSHA FOTTLER

Sandler and The Cobbler Aim for Nice but Hit Creepy

Start at the feet and pan up Adam Sandler: the sneakers, the pants that never quite fit, the sloped shoulders, the furrowed brow and world-weary sulk. He's a cartoon man drawn the same in every movie, whether he's in a lonely walk-up or a McMansion crammed with kids. Sandler plays the loser even when his characters have great jobs, hot wives, and ideal circumstances. Even then, he simmers with entitlement -- he's always one macchiato away from a meltdown.

What's fascinating about Sandler today is how hard he tries to keep from boiling over. In his twenties and early thirties, he elected to play hotheads and morons. Now 48, he's spent the last decade choosing to play a nice guy. Ironically, his "lovable" schlubs are more unnerving. His characters' problems used to stem from their personalities -- he was the joke. In films like his latest, Thomas McCarthy's The Cobbler, where he plays a fourth-generation Manhattan shoe-smith who still lives with his mom (Lynn Cohen), Sandler's the straight man: a victim of a universe that rewards the rich, handsome, or cruel, the spokesman for all those sad, self-pitying creeps who claim chicks only like assholes.

Max Simkin is the ultimate Sandler creation: miserable, unappreciated, dateless, and too developmentally arrested to do a damned thing about it. When Max was a boy, his father (Dustin Hoffman) ditched the family, leaving Max to run the cobbler shop the Simkins have owned for over a century. McCarthy and co-screenwriter Paul Sado assume we'll empathize with Max's stuck situation, which is hard. You can root for a 28-year-old who's been handed a raw deal, but twenty years later -- and in a high-value New York real estate market -- he's guilty of inertia. The Cobbler earnestly buffs out his faults, hoping we won't notice the cracks. But when its virginal bachelor is two years shy of 50, you can't pretend that he just hasn't met the right girl.

The Cobbler

Now available on demand.

Directed by Tom McCarthy. Written by Tom McCarthy and Paul Sado. Starring Adam Sandler, Method Man, Ellen Barkin and Steve Buscemi.

One day at the store, Max breaks out a vintage stitching machine that sews soles onto shoes. We know from a prologue that the contraption is magic, a gift from an angel who bestowed it upon Max's ancestor in 1903. To Max's shock, when he kicks off his New Balances and slides into local gangster Ludlow's (Method Man) expensive wingtips, he becomes the crook. Yes, he's literally walking in another man's shoes. But for all its talk about souls and soles, the movie misses the parable's point. Max isn't gaining insight into a person's struggles. He's simply stealing their body to have some fun.

At first, all this is a little sweet. Wearing an Asian man's shoes to stroll through Chinatown, Max is making life more interesting by vacationing at home. Then it gets murky. Max wears the shoes of a rich white man to joyride in his sports car, and the shoes of his handsome white neighbor (Dan Stevens) to see what it's like to feel attractive. It's forgivable wish fulfillment until he enters the apartment of the hot guy he's embodying, watches his model girlfriend take a shower, and considers stepping into the water for a shag. He stops himself not because it's date rape but because he'd have to take off his boots and reveal the ruse. Congrats, comedy -- you've gone back in time to the Darth Vader costume gag in Revenge of the Nerds, which insisted all nerds deserve a shot at a babe, with or without her informed consent.

The scene rankles because the movie continues to deny that Max is a creep. It's all chipper music and but-he-means-well optimism -- the real villain is a real estate developer (Ellen Barkin), whom Max will eventually rouse himself to defeat with the power of shoes. The Cobbler maintains the delusion even when our hero starts committing crimes -- walking out on restaurant bills, stealing loafers from a millionaire on the street -- in the skin of black men. Once might be a misstep on the part of the filmmakers. Three times, without comment on the pattern, is toxic. The fourth time, Max finally swaps in a white person...a transvestite.

And, in case we forgot (as the film seems to have), Max looks like actual people who could conceivably be arrested for his bad behavior. By the time he busts into Ludlow's house costumed as a black teenager to rob him of his expensive watch collection (totally justifiable, according to the movie, since Ludlow said something mean about his mom), The Cobbler has invented a new category of terrible: cruel schmaltz. I found myself guiltily hoping that Ludlow's vengeful thugs would attack one of the shoe shop's innocent customers to give Max, and his movie, a conscience. No such bad luck.

A man-child comedian matures at a crawl, kicking and screaming and clinging to what sold seats before. Like Robin Williams before him, Sandler's done hapless romantics, he's done dads, he's done drag. Now it's time to play outright villains in movies braver than The Cobbler, movies that admit the darkness roiling under his smile. Ironically, the closest Sandler's come is when Judd Apatow cast him in Funny People to play, more or less, Adam Sandler. With his charm evaporating more and more with every bad film, he needs to lace up his sneakers, take a long look in a mirror, and figure out how to be the best version of the man he's become.

"This year we've been lucky to have a warm and sunny spring, and the great weather has been an extra motivation for homeowners who are eager to makeover their outdoor spaces and transform their drab patios into places where they can barbecue, hang out, and throw parties. For those who want to kick-off a new outdoor home improvement project, then, we offer a wide selection of tile flooring options that would be perfect for the task. Whether a customer prefers a cool ceramic tile look, a rustic stone aesthetic, or a playful mosaic tile pattern, they'll be certain to find a low-cost, durable, and attractive option at BuyTile," said Marty Waisbrod, CEO of the tile floors supplier.

One porcelain tile series that's well suited to outdoor usage is the Angkor product line by high-quality Italian manufacturer Cerdomus. Available in seven different shades, including the golden-hued Oro, the blue-tinted Oceana, and the delicate Bianco, the tiles are finished with a textured stone style, lending them a rustic and classic appeal that would especially complement a Mediterranean-inspired design scheme. Functional in both exterior wall and tile flooring settings, the porcelain tile is durable enough for outdoor installation while retaining its attractive appearance. Cerdomus's tiles, which are discounted a minimum of 20% off at BuyTile, are available in 3" x 13", 2" x 6", 1" x 3", and 6.5" x 6.5" sizes.

For a look that tends more towards the whimsical, Coverall Stone Inc.'s cut pebble tiles, also currently subject to steep discounts, are another tile floor variety that would work well in an outdoor setting. Crafted from durable, natural stone pebbles that are tinted in six different inviting shades, the varyingly sized pebbles are arranged in a randomized mosaic formation that achieves a rich, textured look. Sold in square foot tiles with a supportive mesh backing, the pebble mosaic products are easy to install in tile floors. Perfect for patios, decks, fire pits, or even surrounding pools and ponds, the tile flooring is now reduced 20% off its original pricing down to $21.95 per square.

For customers striving to create an elegant and stately look in their outdoor spaces, Northeastern Tiles's Botticino Line stone tile makes for an impressive flooring solution. Crafted from high-quality tumbled marble in tawny and cream hues with varying levels of variegation, the 12" x 12" features an embedded star-shaped pattern in the center. Suitable for commercial and domestic uses, marble is durable and attractive, and is also frost-resistant when used outdoors. Now discounted a full 36% off its original price, the tile flooring is on offer for $27.37 per piece.

Medical College receives 2,200 applications for 25 spots at Green Bay campus

The Medical College of Wisconsin's main campus in Wauwatosa

If applications are any measure, the Medical College of Wisconsin's new Green Bay campus is off to a smashing start.

The Wauwatosa-based medical school received about 2,200 applications for 25 spots in its first class, spokeswoman Maureen Mack said Friday. Medical College officials are in the process of accepting and offering spots to students, she said.

Classes are set to begin this summer at the Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay's community medical education program. The Green Bay branch is on the campus of St. Norbert College in De Pere.

Dr. Matthew Hunsaker, dean of the Green Bay campus, said in an interview Friday that applicants came from across a "good representation" of Wisconsin's geography.

"We're excited about the volume of interest we generated," Hunsaker said. "It speaks to the level of need."

The main goal of the new campus is to address a shortage of physicians in Wisconsin outside the major metro areas. The state's two existing medical schools are in metro Milwaukee and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Medical College of Wisconsin calls the initiative a community-based medical education program.

One reason for the high number of applicants was that Wisconsin students who otherwise would look outside the state for a medical school decided to apply at the Green Bay campus, Hunsaker said.

Most prospective medical students apply at multiple schools. Those who are accepted to a given school make their final decisions by May, Hunsaker said.

Despite the large influx of applications, Medical College officials are not considering increasing the size of the class in Green Bay, Hunsaker said.

For one thing, tuition does not cover the entire cost of a medical-school education so the Medical College would have to identify other sources of revenue or donations, he said. Also, the Medical College wants to ensure the quality of the education, clinical experiences and residencies remains at a high level, Hunsaker said.

Hawaii Pacific Health contemplates Wahiawa General Hospital purchase

Hawaii Pacific Health

Hawaii Pacific Health is contemplating a full or partial purchase of Wahiawa General Hospital, the medical provider's spokeswoman confirmed to PBN Friday.

The financially struggling rural hospital has signed a nondisclosure agreement with HPH, the state's largest medical provider, HPH spokeswoman Kristen Bonilla told PBN.

"Hawaii Pacific Health and Wahiawa General Hospital have entered into very preliminary discussions to explore a potential future relationship," Bonilla said. "To say anything further at this point would be entirely premature."

HPH is also seeking to acquire three Hawaii Health Systems Corp. state hospitals in the Maui region. The state House of Representatives recently advanced legislation that would allow such a move.

A future deal could potentially involve the Koa Ridge development project in Central Oahu by Castle Cooke, which set aside land for a medical complex that could expand or replace Wahiawa General Hospital.

PBN has reached out to Wahiawa General Hospital for comment.

a museum in Cheyenne, WY

The museum itself houses plenty of early 20th century black-and-white photographs and artifacts collected locally from the early days of the railroad, all documenting construction and change throughout the years. Both the right and left brained among us can be delighted at the grayed-out, linear, mathematically mustered yet mindfully designed engineer's drawings caught in various stages of completion and scattered throughout the place. In addition, please treat yourself to the close observation of a Varineau Randall map of the Union Pacific Railroad complete with a profile of grades and a yellowing hue. To really up the ante and get more train on the brain, take a little trip through the excessively shiny marble and glass stairwell on the western-most end of the building which displays a narrow variety of train art. Once you've made it to the second floor, a highly informative Dr. Tom is rarely absent, which is a jackpot of encounters when looking for more information on the one to eighty-four (scale in feet) train model filling up the entire floor. Designed and built by Harry Brunk, it is a model of a train and of the fruits of relentless effort and dedication. Observe closely, speak up, and listen intently because this is one of those places that is sure to open up your world, even if that world is miniature and set in Colorado in the 1930's.

Slurping Up Maki Boy on a Hunt for DFW's Best Ramen

Michelle learned to love ramen as a teenager, growing up in Singapore and traveling around Asia with her family. Brian is newer to the scene: He didn't even try instant ramen in college. Together, they're hunting for DFW's best ramen.

The Shop: Maki Boy in Irving

The Atmosphere: A Christmas wreath hangs in the front entryway at Irving's Maki Boy, and the cash register is adorned with little stuffed Christmas penguins wearing knit scarves. The mint bowl is an old Halloween bucket. Someone has painted flowers and birds on the walls, then surrounded them with framed photos of coral reefs. A slot machine in the corner emits a steady tenor beat, and the restaurant speakers loudly blare a Zumba workout playlist. The private dining room's curtain has talking cartoon cats. Above the bar, there's a single bottle of Veuve Clicquot Brut, with a little sign saying NOT FOR SALE. Right next to the Veuve is a Turkish flag, which makes sense, because the owners are Korean.

So basically the atmosphere is perfect and we love it.

Service: Order at the register and they'll bring your stuff out. If you plan on sampling the bar's impressive range of Asian beers, sit at the counter to ogle the collection and more easily get the staff's attention.

What We Ordered: The $8.95 sushi/ramen combo meal. There are two kinds of ramen, miso and spicy seafood, and if you order the combo your "mini" bowl is served with 10 pieces of sushi. "Mini" is a word which, at Maki Boy, means "still too big to finish." The sushi is chef's choice. Michelle ordered the miso ramen combo, and Brian got the spicy seafood ramen.

You can get other standard fare, too, like udon, bento boxes, and specialty sushi rolls. Plus, Maki Boy has a liquor license and knows how to use it. Pro tip from Michelle's husband about the Korean beer Hite: "It is not good. I will save you the trouble. It is not good."

All meals come with free appetizers at a little salad bar. Stock up on pickled ginger and lemon for your sushi, grab some kimchi, or do what we do and pig out on the delicious marinated broccoli.

The Ramen: The spicy seafood ramen is loaded with scallops, shrimp, clams, imitation crab leg, and a tiny baby octopus, none of them overcooked. There's some squash and seaweed, too. The broth is pretty damn spicy. If you're one of those True Texans who chomps habaneros like chewing gum, there's sriracha on hand for you, but most mortals will be plenty happy with the spice level. By the end, Brian felt warm and woozy, but burned out. This bowl was very, very salty.

The miso ramen isn't loaded with much of anything -- a few pieces of squash, a single piece of imitation crab, some miso chunks, seaweed flakes, and green onions. The broth is oversalted to make up for underlying blandness: no meat flavor in the broth, and definitely no nuances of garlic or ginger. The noodles were equally bland and slightly overcooked. Opt for the heartier, more flavorful spicy seafood ramen or a bowl of udon instead.

Maki Boy has its hits and misses, but that's not too bad for $8.95. Our favorite things were the broccoli, the atmosphere, and the fact that we got so much food for the cost of a single Uptown sushi roll. But with such salty broth and no pork option, this ramen won't be winning our loyalty.

Recommended if: your office is in Irving, you're pescatarian, and your coworkers-who-lunch are cheapskates.

Tom Spicer Was Unique and Quirky and Awesome Until the Day He Died

"I just want basic security doing what I love and want to share. Peace-out --

Spice"

That was the last line of the final message I'll ever receive from Tom Spicer. Looking at it now, it seems as fitting as it does eerie.

Spicer was recently booted from his storefront (and the garden that was plated behind it) on Fitzhugh Avenue. I'd written Spicer because I wanted to learn more about his next move, but he said that much of his business was still up in the air. He didn't have any of the answers to my questions then, and now I'll never get to finish that interview.

Spicer, as you've read by now, died at his home yesterday. He was washing berries at his kitchen sink at home when he died, D reported. Those that were close to him will no doubt note that he was doing what he loved.

But you didn't have to be close to Spicer to feel his vacuum. Any journalist who's written about the guy will tell you he was a quirky and entertaining interview. That last email he sent me was filled with disappointment about losing his longtime shop and the massive garden he'd been tending for years out back. It was also made cracks about "gentry-fries" and his changing neighborhood.

Spicer sold produce to customers and wholesale to area restaurants for more than two decades. His recently closed shop, Spiceman's 1410, was the best place in Dallas to shop for exotic mushrooms, among other things. Spicer would sell paper sacks filled with his latest shipments from growers from around the country and then charge you $10. He called it a dime bag. It was truly a one of a kind shop, and it was missed, just like he will be.

Homemade Mosaics Guide

Nn+g~~60_57.JPG" width="271" />

Mosaic plaques or trivets, whether made with ceramic tile or stoneware, are beautiful and easy crafts to make

The most common material for making mosaic is ceramic tile, but there are other objects that can be used just as easily. A popular alternative to the tile is ceramic or glass dishes. (Please note: although glass can be beautiful it is not highly recommended due to its tendency to splinter into fine pieces and cause injury.)

Old ceramic dishes make a great substitute price wise also. They can be found for very reasonable prices at flea markets, yard sales and thrift shops.

Regardless of which medium you choose to use, you will need the equivalent of one square foot.

To make a 7" x 10" mosaic plaque or trivet you will need:

1 - wood cut out of the shape you desire (close to the above size guidelines)

1 - 1 square foot equivalent of ceramic tile or dishes

2 - cups of tile grout

white glue, water, masking tape, large heavy duty ziploc bag, hammer, container for grout, sandpaper, sponge, soft rag, sawtooth hanger (if making a plaque)

Directions: To prepare ceramic tile or dishes for use, place a couple into the large ziploc bag and seal. Hammer until medium is broken up into pieces of various sizes. Remove from bag to your work area and continue this process until all tile is broken up. Leaving a 1/2" margin between ceramic edge and edge of your shape, lay all of the edge pieces in place first, without glue. Be sure to leave space between each piece for tile grout. When you have your outer edge exactly as you want it, go back over it and glue each piece into place, one at a time. Once your edge is on and dry, you can continue this same process with the remainder of your plaque or trivet. It usually works best to lay out and glue a section at a time. If you get near the end and find you don't have quite the right fit, you can recreate the edges with a hammer or a bevel. But remember, the beauty of mosaic is the irregularities of the shapes. This is one instance where pieces that fit perfectly together will detract from its uniqueness.

Once your shape is covered it needs to completely dry for a minimum of 8 hours. Before grouting, cover the wooden edges of your plaque/trivet with masking tape. Mix your grout and water in the container until the grout is smooth and creamy. It is important to note that you should be careful to not let any grout go down a sink drain as it will set and block your pipes.

Using your hand for best results, put a pile of grout in the very middle of the plaque and work it evenly from the center to all of the edges until entire plaque or trivet is covered. Using your hand again, immediately remove the excess and let it set for 12 hours.

Once it has set, take a wet sponge and wipe off the tile with a wet sponge. "Do this several times, rinsing the sponge out between each use. At this time, if you see any uneven grout or air holes you can fill them in with more grout. It again needs to set for another 1/2 hour. Wipe once again with a lightly damp sponge. Let set for 20 minutes this time. Once the 20 minutes is up, take the soft rag and "polish" the plaque/trivet.

At this point you can remove the masking tape and attach your hanger. The hanger should be the type that can attach to the top of the plaque so that it can be laid flat to use as a trivet if desired.

The History of the Versace Mansion

Outside the Versace MansionBest known as the South Beach vacation home of the late Gianni Versace, the "Versace Mansion," Casa Casuarina is now a 35-room club, open either by invitation of the founding members, or by renting a room as a temporary member.

Since 2000, North Carolina telecommunications magnate Peter Loftin has owned the Casa Casuarina.

Casa Casuarina's Origins as a Villa for Artists

Although its exclusivity seems to hark back to the days of Versace's glittering parties, in fact, the South Beach villa has returned to its pre-Versace days as a haven for artists, as it was when Standard Oil heir Alden Freeman built it in 1930.

Freeman built the villa as a tribute to what was then the oldest existing house in the western hemisphere, the Alcazar de Colon built by Christopher Columbus' son Diego in Santo Domingo in 1510. The freewheeling millionaire filled the villa with his bohemian friends, including Isadora Duncan's brother Raymond.

Gianni Versace Buys and Expands the Villa

When Versace bought the mansion in the early 1990s, he expanded on the original 16th-century Mediterraneandesign by creating a south wing from the remains of an adjacent hotel and installing a pool and garden.

Versace kept many of Freeman's original commissions - the Moorish tile, tapestries, mosaics and classical busts that had given the villa its original character.

Inside the Casa Casuarina

Today, the new club offers members a choice of three lounges with different moods: the Moroccan Lounge, in the space that once held Versace's workout equipment; the Davidoff Lounge with its crackling fireplace; and the alumni club-style Club Room with a large-screen TV.

Every day except Tuesday, from noon until the last person leaves, members can be pampered in the day spa, gaze up at the stars from the Observatory roof deck and swim in the mosaic waterfall pool.

Although Loftin hasn't changed much about the place structurally, he's redecorated and added a few touches, such as planting bamboo and bougainvillea between date palms to make the place even more secluded than it currently is.

He's planned a glass bar for the roof, and Donatella Versace's Plexiglas pool cover has been reintroduced into service for dancing on the pool and holding runway shows. Loftin would even like to have the Miami City Ballet perform over the pool.

The VIP Treatment

For dining, guests can enjoy the all-day culinary ministrations of Barton G., though not in a restaurant per se. Members are also be treated to butler and concierge service from European concierge outfit, Quintessentially.

The concierge won't just book local reservations - after all, members won't exactly have difficulty getting immediate reservations and VIP treatment - but will also be able rent yachts and plan international trips or, conversely, have must-have items flown in.

Rooms at Casa Casuarina

Of the villa's original 15 luxuriously decorated bedrooms, 10 are now available as suites rented by the night. Each suite is decorated in a theme: Italian, Persian, Egyptian, Wedgewood, Baroque, La Mer, Parrot, Pompeii, Safari and Owner's Suite.

The rooms average $1,200 per night in the off-season, which is summer and early fall in Miami, and start at $4,000 in season. The rate includes the same full use of the mansion that any member would have.

Loftin's goal for the villa, which he has lusted after since he watched a television interview with Versace standing in its courtyard, was to create a club atmosphere where interesting people from different industries and walks of life could mingle without feeling, as he has said, that "somebody wants something from 'em. This is a refuge where they can enjoy people they wouldn't normally have a chance to enjoy."

Cool LEGO Lenticular Mosaics Turn Heroes Into Villains

lenticular lego mosaic snow white evil queen

Or is that villains turned into heroes? We already know that LEGO can be made into awesome artwork, but the effect is heightened when it can actually move. Redditor ihlaking recently posted a cool lenticular mosaic they came across at a LEGO convention: Depending where you stand, the portrait shifts from Snow White to the Evil Queen and back.

Some quick Google-fu revealed that these LEGO lenticular mosaics have been around for a few years, with a number of LEGO fans having the same idea to merge the faces of famous protagonists and their evil counterparts.

Here's the Snow White/Evil Queen mosaic, by Brick Blue Wren:

Shed 2 at the Dallas Farmers Market Reopens in June, Is Going to Be Awesome

If you've been to the new and improved Dallas Farmers Market in recent months, you've probably noticed that Shed 2, former home to Pecan Lodge and Ain't No Mo Butter Cakes (I miss you dearly, mini butter cakes), has been undergoing renovations since the market officially relaunched in the middle of last year. Last week, the Market announced that it would be reopening Shed 2 this summer, and it looks like it's going to feature some exciting additions and old favorites.

The renovations to the 26,000 square foot Shed 2 look to be pretty comprehensive. Multiple indoor seating spaces will be added, along with an improved layout that makes Shed 2 easier to shop. The building will also get a major aesthetic overhaul, with a new look that features "natural elements and colors inspired by nature," which is probably a great improvement over the stark white walls and unfinished interior that existed previously.

Thirteen new vendors will join Shed 2 in June, including Mild Bill's Spice Shop, Sterling Tea, Doc Popcorn, and Dallas Caramel Company, all of which are pretty self-explanatory. Also joining these new vendors are a few of Dallas' established favorites, like a second outpost of Oak Lawn's Scardello Cheese shop, and the killer Cajun-themed crawfish truck Cajun Tailgators.

Two new restaurant concepts will also occupy part of Shed 2's footprint. Jack's Modern Southern Kitchen, a reincarnation of the restaurant that once made a name for itself serving up delicious biscuits and gravy on Lower Greenville, will serve up (duh) southern comfort food. Si Tapas, a Downtown fave, will also open up a new location that will focus on serving up paellas, hot and cold tapas, and delicious cured meats. These concepts will join a slate of exciting restaurants that have already been announced, including Shannon Wynne's Mudhen, Nammi/Coolhaus, and Taqueria La Ventana.

Unfortunately, the Chicago-style deli and barbecue aren't around anymore, but you'll still be able to find some of your old favorites in Shed 2. Not to worry, though, some of your old favorite vendors will be returning as well. The Farmers Market outpost of La Popular Tamale House will reopen, joined by familiar faces like Boom Juice, Caribbean Cabana, and Frenchie's Bistro. Sadly, it doesn't seem like the sweet old fudge man who was extremely generous with the samples will be sticking around.

Before the revitalization of the Dallas Farmers Market, Shed 2 was very hit-or-miss, especially once Pecan Lodge vacated the space. You could occasionally find vendors selling fresh Gulf shrimp or hand-cranked sausages, but they likely wouldn't be there if you chose to return a few weeks later. The major loss, though, is Supernatural Meats, a collective of farmers who sold their pastured pork, poultry, and beef in a small booth in the back of Shed 2. Where else am I supposed to find organic soup bones and rendered chicken fat?

With all of the improvements being made to the produce side of the Market, it's nice to see that the company who took it over is also paying careful attention in making sure that Shed 2 isn't just a place where you go to cool off in the heat of summer.

★ How to Mosaic DIY Tutorials | Project Roundup

Artistic Inspiration For Your New Hobby!

Mosaic is a brilliant craft to master and the results are very long lasting - both indoors and outdoors. Your projects can be small or you can really let your imagination go wild!

On this page you will find the information you need to start making your own mosaic patterns and projects, with links to beginner's instructions and ideas to inspire you to give this addictive art a go. Mosaics are a 4-step process; designing the mosaic pattern, gluing the tiles to the base, grouting and sealing, and you will find step-by-step tutorials listed below that will walk you through every stage.

I hope you find lots of inspiration here :)

An Introduction To Mosaic

A Summary Of The Craft Process

The very first things to decide before you make your mosaic are whether the mosaic will live indoors or outdoors, and also what the size and design of the piece will be. It's best to start small as a beginner, such as adding broken ceramic plate pieces to a flower pot. Once you have the basics sorted, you can get creative with your designs.

There are 4 things you need to create a mosaic:

- Tesserae; the pieces which form the patterned surface of the mosaic. These pieces can be made with so many materials from stained glass to shell, and pebbles to broken plates. To cut ceramic tiles you use specially designed nippers; for cutting glass you use glass nippers and cutters.

- Substrate/base; the solid non-porous surface onto which the tesserae will be attached. Outdoor projects usually have a base of cement/concrete, ceramic, glass or stone, whilst indoor projects can have a base of wood instead if preferred (although porous surfaces should still be sealed before having mosaic applied on top.)

- Adhesive; The glue which sticks the tesserae onto the base.

- Grout; This looks like a paste and is used to fill the gaps in between the tesserae after they have been stuck onto the base. You can buy unsanded or sanded grout. Unsanded grout is finer and is used to fill gaps of only a few millimeters, whereas sanded grout is for wider gaps. Grout comes in powder form (unless it's pre-mixed), and you mix it with water in order to use it. After applying to the mosaic, the excess is removed (with a sponge usually) so that the top surfaces of the tesserae can be entirely seen. When the grout has dried slightly, you can use a cloth to further clean the surface. A few days after grouting you should then add a grout sealer to protect your grout from dirt and to keep it looking good.

Have fun!

1) Prepare the rigid base you are using for your mosaic.

To do this, first clean the surface. Then, if necessary, sand the material to roughen it up and make it easier for the next layer to adhere strongly to it. You only need to do this for very smooth surfaces.

If you are using wood (such as MDF or plywood) for the base you should seal the surface of it as part of this preparation step.

2) Plan your design and draw the position of the basic outlines onto the base.

3) Use tile cutters, nippers and other cutting tools to create tesserae in the sizes you require. Then lay the tesserae/tiles out in the design you want on the base so that you can see what it will look like and make any alterations before permanently attaching the pieces.

4) Apply the adhesive.

Many different adhesives can be used to stick the tiles/tesserae to the base material, including PVA, epoxy, tile mastic and cement/mortar-based adhesives such as thin-set. It is important to use an adhesive suited to it's environment; if your mosaic will be outdoors, the adhesive will need to be strong and waterproof.

Apply the adhesive with a spatula or other spreading tool, then position the tesserae on top and press down into the adhesive. Do this bit by bit; don't cover the whole base with adhesive first but instead cover the base one small section at a time.

You don't want to use so much adhesive that it fills the gaps in between the tesserae, as this will prevent the grout from filling the gaps. Therefore make sure to remove excess adhesive from in between the mosaic pieces.

Leave the adhesive to dry.

5) Add the grout.

You will most likely be using sanded grout as this can be used for any size of gap between the tesserae, however unsanded can be used if the gaps are very narrow. You can buy the grout pre-mixed but most people opt to mix their own from powder. You can choose the colour of grout to best suit your mosaic design.

Spread the grout over the tesserae, pressing it into the gaps, until the whole piece is covered. It's easier to manipulate the grout if you are using your hands for this step - although remember to wear disposable gloves.

6) Clean the mosaic.

After the grout has been in place for about 5-10 minutes (or whatever length of time your grout instructions recommend), use a damp sponge to start wiping the excess grout off the mosaic, until the tesserae surfaces are clean. Keep rinsing the sponge regularly to clean the grout off it. It's best to have a bucket of clean water to rinse your sponge in; grout shouldn't be put down the drain.

7) Leave to dry.

Leave the grout for the recommended time for it to set completely. You may want to spray a fine mist of water onto the grout every 30 minutes or so to stop it drying too fast and perhaps cracking.

8) Seal the grout.

Applying grout sealer protects it from liquids, so is an especially important step if you wish to keep your mosaic outside.

That's it!

PetraSlate Tile & Stone Encourages Customers to Embrace the New Trend That is Taking Kitchen Remodeling by Storm: Mosaic Tiles.

Denver, CO, August 08, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Mosaic tiles are more than just a new fad in the kitchen remodeling industry and more and more people are starting to choose mosaics because of all their various customization options. PetraSlate Tile Stone (http://petraslate.com/) is a company with over 24 years of expertise of working with slate products and was recently chosen as the top Colorado distributor of mosaic tiles. PetraSlate Tile Stone, however, is partial to customers using natural stone. Although glass, ceramic, porcelain, and even metal mosaics can make a great addition to a kitchen, PetraSlate believes that stone provides a style and longevity that will never go out of fashion. PetraSlate Tile Stone encourages customers who are interested in purchasing mosaic tiles to consider premium natural stone mosaic, a specialty at PetraSlate.

There are several natural benefits that natural stone has to offer:

- Natural stone comes in a variety of colors and textures that cannot be duplicated in any way by man-made materials.

- Pink and light green bathrooms can attest to the fact that colored glass and porcelains can quickly become outdated. However, stone, with its natural hues, rarely goes out of fashion.

- The textures and combinations of natural stone complement each other perfectly.

- Stone brings an air of sophistication and elegance to any space.

The entire purpose of mosaic tiles is to complement existing decor and should only be considered the accent that supports a whole; too much mosaic can become overwhelming. When choosing mosaics whether glass, ceramic, porcelain, metal, or stone, it is important to choose products of high quality. The quality of natural stone mosaics can be determined by looking at each of the individual pieces that make up the whole. If the pieces are ill-fitting, chipped, or look like scraps, the quality will be reflected in the final product. Visit PetraSlate Tile Stone to see first-hand what quality natural mosaic stone can look like.

Mosaic Patterns for Kids

The art of creating patterns, designs and images with the help of different stones, colored glasses and other such materials is termed as mosaic. The mosaic art has traditionally been used for decoration works in cathedrals. It is an art form, mainly used for interior decoration however, these days it is also used for many other decorative purposes. Most of all, kids can participate in this activity to exercise their creative skills. Children should start with simple patterns and designs in order to first become familiar with this art form. Once they develop interest in making mosaic patterns, they should be encouraged to move onto the intricate and complex designs.

Mosaic Designs and Patterns

The mosaic designs and patterns could be anything from simple flower shapes to complex and intricate human portraits or patterns found in nature. The mosaic art has developed as a form of expression that is alternative to painting and drawing. You could either follow the standard designs or apply your creativity to make completely new patterns. There is great scope for exploring one's abilities and skills through mosaic art.

Mosaic Patterns for Kids

There is great variety in the mosaic designs meant for children. One should start with simple patterns and allow them to go for the complex ones later on. The different patterns for children could be the ones which depict entities from nature like sun, trees, animals, etc. Designs of objects that we see in day-to-day life can also be used in the creation. For example, the mosaic of windmill is one of the easy-to-make patterns for children. Similarly, toys and other simple objects can be used for creating mosaic patterns. As far as possible, geometric shapes should be chosen; it is easy to arrange mosaic tiles in a geometric pattern. Mosaic patterns for beginners include basic shapes; even slight decorations in basic shapes can make them appear catchy. Variations in shapes are brought about by using your creativity should help enhance the appearance. The bird designs provide great scope for decoration, owing to different colors and designs in which they are found in nature. The bird wings incorporate a number of patterns and shades of colors. There is also a lot to experiment in flower shapes and patterns. For example, the designs of lotus, sunflower and psychedelic flower are interesting and easy to work on for children. Materials used for it include paper, glass, salt dough, tiles, etc.

The patterns with tree as their theme can be created with many different variations. Branches, leaves and fruits which form an integral part of trees allow for exhibiting the decorative skills. Children should be encouraged to work on those shapes and patterns which interest them. Creating shapes of butterflies also is a nice idea for mosaic making. It is very important that the mosaic designs and patterns are kept as simple as possible. The benefit of keeping it simple is that kids are able to work with ease; it means they actually enjoy the process of creating mosaic patterns. Dragon fly mosaics too are easy to create and children enjoy the decoration work. A fairy cross created with the help of mirror and opalescent tiles is a nice pattern and quite easy for children to make. Creating frames through the use of mosaic tiles also is a nice idea. In this art form, kids are able to create their own designs; it is not necessary that one should follow a certain, set rules or guidelines. Thus, it helps in exploring the creative skills without any obligation of following a certain procedure.

History of Mosaic Art

The mosaic art is known to have a long history which dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. It was in Abra, Mesopotamia that the earliest traces of mosaic art were found. Influence of mosaic art can be seen on many civilizations across the world. Geometric patterns of ancient times are found in a building in the Ubaid town of Mesopotamia. However, these patterns were not exactly mosaic and their earliest forms were first created in the times of Sassanid Empire.

The mosaic patterns described in this article should provide the children with lots of ideas to work on. These ideas should help them create interesting patterns with the use of tiles, paper, glass or other materials.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals approved to buy Dendreon for $495 million

Seattle biotech company Dendreon Corp.'s sale to Valeant Pharmaceuticals was approved today by a bankruptcy court judge. The final sale price was $495 million.

Quebec-based Valeant Pharmaceuticals received approval from a bankruptcy court judge today to buy the assets of Dendreon Corp., a Seattle biotech that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November, the Wall Street Journal reported.

At $495 million, the final sale price surpassed the price reported in initial arrangements. Originally Valeant was to buy the company for $400 million, but the price increased due to "significant modifications as recently as Thursday night" to the sale, according to the Journal.

Dendreon's main product is Provenge, a prostate cancer drug. While Provenge was met with much fanfare when approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2010, long regulatory approval processes and competition made it tough for Dendreon to stay afloat.

Before filing for bankruptcy, the company went through two years of falling revenues and reported losses.

The sale is expected to close on Monday.

The Fried Okra at Ten50 BBQ Is Better Than Your Grandma's

It takes a lot to make the best version of a Southern dish. Everyone is willing to fight to the death to preserve the honor of their grandmama's hot water cornbread or collard greens, which means that saying that something like fried okra is better than something your Granny would cook for Sunday supper is a huge statement. Fortunately, the fried okra at Richardson's Ten50 barbecue is up to the challenge.

Fried okra is a surprisingly complicated dish. It has to be extremely fresh when fried, otherwise it turns into a soggy, slimy mass. It must be breaded properly, or the crispy flour coating will fall away before you're even able to dip it into your ranch dressing. At Ten50, they've figured out the perfect flour-based batter that ensures a crisp, light bite of okra every time.

Once you've ordered your smoked meats at the outdoor pits and walked through the line of sides and desserts, it's kind of hard to wait for the fried pickles or fried okra at Ten50. There are at least twelve other tempting dishes, ranging from potato salad to mac and cheese, that could otherwise distract you from the best side dish on the menu there, the fried okra. You'll have to wait a few minutes after coursing through the cafeteria-style line, but you can bet that it will be entirely worth it.

On my visit, the fried okra arrived at the table fresh out of the fryer, still steaming. I was unable to wait for it to cool, and the first three or so pieces that I popped into my mouth probably burned away several taste buds. Nevertheless, I was still able to taste the light blend of spices -- maybe a little Lawry's seasoning salt, that had been mixed into the batter. More than anything else, the okra was perfectly crisp on the outside, and nice and soft on the inside. I'm generally not in the habit of announcing that anything outside of sunny Saturday afternoons in the spring perfect, but the pile of okra that sat next to my brisket and ribs was damn near there.

At $6, fried okra at Ten50 costs as much as a quarter-pound of brisket, which means you'll have to do a little bit of cost-benefit analysis once you get there. Make it happen. Dipped into ranch dressing in true white-trash fashion or drizzled with a little of the restaurant's Carolina barbecue sauce, the okra is exactly what you need to cut the smoky heaviness of Ten50's properly smoked meats.

Sorry, Grandma, but the fried okra at Ten50 is better than the crispy, cornmeal-battered rounds that I happily gobbled up at your table as a kid. If you grew up anywhere in the South and find yourself in dire need of the tastes of home, this snack will cure your homesickness, and you won't even have to see all those weird assholes you went to high school with.

Dragonfly Foundation launches campaign for $30M residential community

Dragonfly Landing Rendering

The new headquarters for the Dragonfly Foundation is designed to look and feel like a home. The facility will be 15,000 square feet, more than double the size of the existing space.

When Dragonfly Foundation co-founders Ria Davidson and Christine Neitzke started talking about a new space for the group's patient/family retreat, called the Landing, they had no idea they were starting on a journey that will create a community unlike any other in the nation.

Working with Dan deStefano, president of W.V. deStefano Homes, Dragonfly board member and chair of the development team, the foundation assembled a team of some of Cincinnati's most respected designers, builders and developers to come up with a plan for a new headquarters for the foundation, surrounded by a 28- to 30-acre development. The project will include 200 apartments, 50 of which will be set aside as short-term housing for Dragonfly families, a boutique hotel, and shared amenities between Dragonfly Foundation and the community, such as a clubhouse, park-like settings with walking trails, and water features.

"Why think small?" said Neitzke, president and co-founder of Dragonfly Foundation. "Our families face restrictions on where they can go and what they can do. Rather than limiting their world to the hospital or their home, motel or alternate housing, we give our families a place, a community, where everyone is totally dedicated to making them smile."

Founded in 2010 after Neitzke's youngest son was diagnosed with stage 3A Hodgkin's lymphoma, Dragonfly Foundation is a nonprofit that provides distractions from the emotional, physical and financial toll of cancer and bone marrow transplants, as well as the post-traumatic stress associated with the diagnosis of a serious illness.

The core of the new community will be the Landing 3.0. The Landing is the name of Dragonfly Foundation's patient/family retreat. Currently, the nonprofit operates out of 6,000 square feet of donated space at 9275 Governors Way in Symmes Township. There, patients and their families have a chance to be normal. Some times it's just the little things, such as having a chance to sit on a couch without being asked harsh or intrusive questions, that Dragonfly family members are looking for.

Neuronetrix gets FDA approval for brain-scan device

Neuronetrix Inc. has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration Approval for a medical device that measures brain activity.

Louisville-based Neuronetrix Inc. has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration Approval for a medical device that measures brain activity.

The device, called the Cognision, has been in development for more than 10 years. It collects data that can be used to evaluate several neurological and cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and concussions, said Neuronetrix CEO K.C. Fadem. The company believes that the market for widespread Alzheimer's diagnostics is particularly strong. I wrote about a clinical trial of the device about this time last year.

Neuronetrix is based out of a 5,000-square-foot office space on Chestnut Street. In the last decade or so, private investors have poured more than $8 million into the business, Fadem told me in an interview in 2013.

It was around then that the company submitted the product for FDA approval, Fadem said. In the approval process, it had to demonstrate both safety and efficacy.

"This is really the biggest hurdle in the development of any medical device," Fadem said.

Now that the company has the approval, its next step will be to begin selling the device -- which it produces in-house -- for clinical use. Fadem was not sure how many units would be produced during the company's first manufacturing run. He said officials there will need to figure out distribution and marketing for the Cognision in the coming months, as well.

About

Fashion is in my blood. When I was a kid, my mom would drive me two hours through crazy LA traffic for photo shoots. I used to hang out with the stylists, try on clothes, get advice. It was a great way to grow up. Eventually, I started giving my friends fashion advice, and never looked back.

After 20 years as a stylist for photographers, I was ready to start a business that would let me evolve my own fashion and consulting style. More than anything, I wanted to share my passion for fashion, and watch as my clients discovered the transformative power of a knock-out look.

Today my clients are CEOs, celebrities, corporate and creative people -- men and women who want serious input on their clothing style, advice on what to wear to an event, or how to put together and pack the most versatile travel wardrobe. I also do styling for fashion shoots, including art direction, makeup, hair, clothing and accessorizing. I’ll make you look great. I promise.
